Sleep Dank sits down with Banski for Part 1 of 2 of an in-depth conversation on The Banski Show.
Born and raised in Vallejo’s Country Club Crest, Sleep Dank takes us all the way back to his childhood and gives a firsthand account of the people, neighborhood and circumstances that helped shape one of the most influential movements in Bay Area rap.
Sleep talks about growing up alongside Dubee and Mac Mall, knowing many of the figures in the Crest long before rap entered the picture, and witnessing Mac Dre’s journey firsthand as the music began to take off. He also opens up about growing up during the crack era, selling drugs at a young age, his family, his late father and grandmother, and how those experiences shaped the man he became.
The conversation goes deep into the history behind the music — from early Crestside rappers and neighborhood demos to Coolio Da’ Unda’ Dogg, Mac Mall, Khayree, Illegal Business?, Cutthoat Committee and Sleep Dank’s own path into the Bay Area rap scene.
Sleep also gets into his history with E-40, including past tensions, how things eventually changed between them, and where their relationship stands today.
And when it comes to Mac Dre, Sleep shares the kind of stories you could only get from somebody who was actually there — Dre’s personality away from the music, his influence on Sleep Dank, Mac Dre’s pimpin’, and the real-life experiences behind some of the records, stories and moments fans are still talking about today.
